Carpets and Furniture

Some of the major chemicals released from new carpets and furniture's are formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and xylene. The carpet fibers themselves, the rubber backing, the glues, dyes, fungicides, and stain resistant treatments all outgas these chemicals for up to three years after installation. However be careful with really old carpets, as they can be an infestation for molds and other allergy-causing agents. Carpets are always the dirtiest places in our homes even when they look clean. As discussed in a daily health tip on WPSM there are alternatives to these toxic products that are put into our homes and most of the time we are unaware of those dangers associated with them. This is just a partial list of certain websites so please investigate further as there is an abundance of information out there.

Allergy free children

In a study published in the journal of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, children with diets over 40 grams (1/3 cup) of "fruity vegetables" such as cucumbers, tomato, eggplant, green beans and zucchini, were less likely to suffer with symptoms of childhood asthma. The same study also showed that children who ate 60 or more grams (about 2 ounces) of omega-3 containing fish were less likely to suffer inherited childhood allergies.

Steps to fortify your immune system

1. Fill your plate with fruits and vegetables; vitamins and phytochemicals give fruits and vegetables their color and we need these nutrients to strengthen our immune system. Aim to consume two different colors of fruits and vegetables with each meal.
2. Decrease sugar intake; sugar lowers our immune systems capability of fending off viruses and bacteria.
3. Make sure that your nervous system is functioning at 100%; our immune system is controlled by our nervous system. A healthy and proper functioning spine equals a healthier nervous system. Have your spine checked by a chiropractor on a regular basis.
4. Drink green tea; green tea contains substances that are antiviral. This benefit can defend us from the cold and flu. However the tea needs to be steeped in hot water for at least one minute in order to release those beneficial substances.
5. Decrease low grade inflammation in your body; this low grade inflammation ties up our immune system and actually weakens it. This is caused by consuming too much sugar, white pasta's, white breads, alcohol, saturated fats and soda drinks. Instead increase fruits and especially vegetables, water, lean meats, omega 3 fatty acids and decrease or eliminate previously mentioned products.
6. Exercise; moderate exercise enhances our immune system. Simply taking a brisk walk is all it takes.
